Belize – Day 10

Ahhh! Air conditioning!!!

Friday. Slept in until about 9 this morning… Got up, and after breakfast, visited with a very nice couple from Texas that was renting the apartment that Connie has at the Copa Banana. The man, Richard, said that they were thinking of retiring to Bz, but weren’t sure yet. When Vaughn told him that we were thinking of moving there also, he said that was too bad – he was sad to see homeschoolers leaving the US as they are the only hope the country has! Richard did say, that if bad times were coming, he would feel safer in the US, where he owns property, and can (does) own guns. He was going into town for a few groceries, and so V & G rode along; a good chance to visit. He told V & G which was the best grocery store he had found there, and when they stopped at the market, my guys picked up a pineapple and some bananas.
When you buy pineapple at the market, the stand operator will ask you if you would like a pineapple for today or for tomorrow. Junior had told the guys that the best pineapple are the short, squatty ones (called sugar loaf), and if desired, the stand owner will choose one for you, determining ripeness based on smell – no smell, it’s not ripe yet…
Back at the Copa Banana, they did some laundry ($5bz), and just kind of hung out recuperating from the busy week they had just spent. Didn’t get to see the crocs in the canal, but did see a balisk lizard run across the water.
Thinking of spending some time on the cayes, so they biked to town to check out the Thunderbolt schedule (large water taxi). Tomorrow they will head out to San Pedro and Caye Caulker for a couple of days.
Tonight they went out to the docks to look for shells but the ocean was very rough. They did see some nationals fishing with a casting net, and the men showed them the small fish that they were trying to catch for dinner, but it was difficult since the water was not calm. V & G went for a swim despite the rough seas.
Went out in the dark to see if they could find any unusual wildlife – only some geckos and two tree frogs clinging to the burglar bars on the hotel window.
At about 7, the electricity went out, and by that time it is very dark there. Wrote in their journals by flashlight. Off to bed early to catch the Thunderbolt in the morning.
