TOS Review – Math U See Calculus…

One of the reasons that I love to review homeschool curriculum, is that it offers me the opportunity to review curriculum companies that we have not used before.  This time we were able to review Math U See‘s Calculus program.

For this review, we received all the products needed to use Math U See’s Calculus level:

Instruction Manual – this 474 page hardcover text, contains all the written lessons.  The first few lessons cover review information, and there are 30 lessons in all.  The text does not contain any questions; the first half of the text is the 30 lessons in print, the second half of the text is the worksheet and test answers.

DVD – This 3 dvd set contains visual, classroom-like lessons for each of the 30 lessons.  Each of the lessons is from 10 to 45 minutes long, and shows Steve Demme, the writer and founder of Math U See giving oral instruction.   The lessons are upbeat and there is some light humor in them.
The Instruction Manual and DVD are sold as a set for $92.

Student Text – this softcover book contains 262 perforated pages of worksheets.  There are 4 daily worksheets for each lesson, each is marked by lesson number (1A, 1B, 1C, 1D).  In the back of the hole-punched book is a glossary and symbols table.

Test Booklet – this smaller softcover text contains a one-page worksheet test for each of the 30 lessons.  There are also a few unit tests that review/cover multiple lessons.  This book is also perforated and 3 hole punched.
The student and test texts are sold as a set for $32.

We used this subject as suggested, with a new worksheet every day, and a test every 5th.  The video was great at explaining the new material, and it was a great change from just trying to figure it out from the written text.  Seeing a person go through the process made it more easily understandable. We also liked how the student worksheets had the problems on them (no making mistakes while transferring the problem to a piece of lined paper), with plenty of room for solutions, and were perforated.

We found Mr. Demme to be a fun teacher who explained his lessons thoroughly and efficiently, yet enjoyably.  I really appreciated that the lessons were on dvd so that I did not have to download them, and Beth could watch them on her personal dvd player.  I am really pleased with Math U See, and I know that, based on other TOS Review Crew reviews, I will be strongly considering Math U See for the littles next year as I LOVE their manipulatives (if you would like to read more about this and other levels of Math U See, you can find more reviews here).
