See the Light Cartooning dvd review…

Our latest new curriculum item to review and share is an art DVD from See the Light, a video based art curriculum!  I don’t have an artistic bone in my body, so I need all the outside help that I can get when it comes to giving my kids art lessons!!!  Besides being interesting, they have to be inexpensive, fun, and engaging.  Did I mention that I don’t want to put a lot of money into specific supplies unless I know one of the kids is really going to get into a certain thing???

For some time now, Thomas has been drawing his own cartoon strips.  He just started creating them in his sketch book, and the interest has continued.  When I saw that one of the products that was offered from See the Light was a Cartooning DVD, there was no question as to whether or not we would like to do this review!

See the Light has 3 different lines of art classes – ‘Art Class‘, which is the first year art program, ‘Art Projects‘, which is a full year of DVDs to follow Art Class, and Bible Stories.  You can even order Art Projects as a DVD of the month at $12.50/each.
Cartooning can be used in conjunction with any of these curriculums, but can also be a stand alone class; any of the DVDS can be purchased individually for $14.99, and all can be used independently.

Thomas (14), Daniel (12), and Joel (9), all used the Cartooning DVD (and Emma and Savanna watched the entire thing in the van).  Lasting a little over an hour, the fast-paced lesson is not broken up into smaller segments, but we didn’t mind since we are plow forward, immersion schoolers anyway (well, when it comes to something interesting! LOL!).  The boys plowed through the whole thing each time, and each time picked up something new.  The lesson was fast paced, and engaging!  Pat, the artist that teaches the lessons, is easy to follow, clear to hear, and the film offers different camera angles so you can observe the entire drawing process.   And even though the Cartooning Video is marketed for ages 5 and up, the boys did not feel that they were too old for it; they enjoyed it so much they watched it several times, each time with their sketchpad and a sharp pencil.  Each time, showing me their new creations as soon as the movie was over.

The boys really enjoyed their cartooning lessons; the favorite, for all 3 of them, was learning the combination of turning basic shapes and letters into characters, and then personalizing those personalities using all the different eyes and other facial features that Pat showed them how to draw.   I am very pleased with our experience with See the Light!  I can see the light of more of their dvds  in our home – I loved that it was pretty much no parent/teacher prep or work, and that it was self-directed.  In my opinion, it’s definitely worth $14.99!
Not sure, go ahead and check out what other crew members had to say about See the Light art DVDs (the crew reviewed several).
