TOS Review – Chess House set…

Our latest review has to be one of my favorites!  We got to review a neat set from Chess House, which was, you guessed it, chess!  Many of us like to play chess, but we didn’t have a set in the RV.  We don’t keep many board games in here because they either take up too much room, or don’t last long in the close quarters.  Here is our Chess House set…

When the starter set came, I knew it would be a fabulous product the minute I opened the box because….
it came in a CAMO case!!!!  Really!  <3  <3  <3
…at our house that means instantly cool…  😉
So, we received a full size Starter Chess Learning Kit, which included:  plastic, durable, regulation size playing pieces, a heavy-duty roll-up chess board, a cool camo case (there are a variety of colors to choose from if camo isn’t your thing), and a DVD ‘Elliott’s Chess School #1 Pawn Level’.   Age range, I would say 6 and up; this starter set is on sale right now for $39.95, which is $10 off.

The case ($14.95) is made very well, and in addition to the short carry handles, it comes with an adjustable shoulder strap that is removable and can be stored inside the case.  There are several interior zipper pockets, and the DVD fits perfectly in the middle one.  There is also a length-wise interior pocket that is perfect for holding notes, or the chess workbooks that you can purchase separately.  For those of you travelers, the case is perfect for taking on a plane, or for the kids to take their set to the campground lodge; also great for taking to friends’ and homeschool co-ops.  anywhere really.

The board is a heavy vinyl, odor free, and made in the USA.  My kids have yet to rip or stretch it (and I’m really surprised given how much the boys pull this set out!!!), so you know it’s heavy-duty!  😉  …course, even if they did get western with it, you can get replacement boards very inexpensively ($6.95), and they even come in all sorts of fun colors (like pink!!!).

The pieces are solid, durable, and easy to clean.  They fit inside the zippered pockets in the case…9.18 035I really liked the quality of the pieces, but my favorite thing has to be…you can buy replacement pieces!!!!  :)   The true mark of a kid-friendly company!!!

We loved the DVD ($20 if purchased separately)!  I will admit that I figured the dvd would be a dud: dry, boring, and hard to watch.  It wasn’t at all!  Chess House is a company owned by 2 brothers, one of which is Elliott Neff, who is a National Master chess champion.  He is down to earth, interesting to listen to, and he gets right to the point!  The dvd is broken up into 10 short lessons; e gives an overview of the marked board, explaining what the letters and numbers are for, tells the different pieces and how they move, and lays out how to play.  He then goes on to tell you how to use effective strategy from the very beginning.

My boys would pull out the set, pop in the dvd, then go between watching the dvd, and playing a game.  There were several times when I would come in from outside, and 2 of them (usually Thomas and Daniel) would be sitting on the floor playing chess.  And they are getting good!  I won’t play with them anymore.  😉

Our Chess House kit has a permanent spot in the RV!  I love that it is quality without weighing a ton, it is self-contained (and portable), and that it is also challenging.   The boys love that it comes in a camo case, now that they’ve watched the dvd they can smoke those olders that didn’t, and that if they are playing chess they will probably get out of the dishes (as opposed to playing any of our other games! 😉 ).

Truly, if you have a child that likes chess, this set would be an awesome Christmas gift!!!
